ELP 2018-2019 Beginning BLOG

MVCSD ELP has begun and we continue to build on our STEM work and pre-computer skills/coding continues.  The above video clip demonstrates our first experience with Ozobots.  The ozobots "follow" the color-coded/computer coded path created by the students.  Our challenges were to apply the computer coding we have learned and create new paths for the ozobot to follow.  The sensors on the ozobot "read" the color-coded computer language.

Our next undertaking will be Genius Hour (www.geniushour.com) for the 6th and 7th grade students.  
4th Grade will be further developing The Ronald McDonald pop tab collection and fundraising for The Ronald McDonald House Foundation
2nd-5th Grade are continuing on their coding (www.code.org) continuum and finding ways to apply the coding skills with other STEM/robotic activities.

Welcome to ELP

Welcome to the  ELP (Extended Learning Program) at the Mo. Valley Community Schools.  I am excited to be delving into the learning behind ELP and helping students to grow as learners, readers, problem solvers and citizens. 4th ELP STEM

The 4th Grade ELP students are delving into a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) project to begin our year.  The students collaborated in small groups to create a series of mazes for their robotic mouse to maneuver.  Students utilized basic coding/programming skills to move their mouse from the start to the finish.  Our next step will be to write the coding script for one of their mazes, then exchange the scripts.  Another small group will use the coding script to see if they can program their mouse to follow the steps.   In the future, the 4th ELP group will be meeting in the computer lab with a coding program (code.org) where we will build on their basic programming skills.

The Ancient Olympics and Modern-Day Olympics

I'm not sure about you, but the London Summer Olympics 2012 captivated my attention and the attention of the oldest 2 daughters in our household.  While preparing for the school year, I kept coming back to the topic of The Olympics........ For the past 2 weeks, the ELP students have been focusing on learning about the Ancient Olympic games, held for over 2,000 years in Olympia, Greece.  We have also studied the re-birth of the Olympics in modern times, beginning in 1896.   The 3rd grade students have been practicing a Reader's Theater about Jesse Owens and the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.  In partners, they have created a story map retelling the story of Jesse Owen's Olympic feats.  They will be sharing the Reader's Theater with the other 3rd grade classrooms.
