3rd ELP Begins Service Learning Project
The 3rd Grade ELP group has begun its first service learning project. Students are creating informational posters letting the MV Elementary students know we are collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House charities. The pop tabs collected will be sent to a recycling station where, based on the overall weight, money will be donated to the local Ronald McDonald House. We have currently collected 957,000 pop tabs and they have set a new goal of 1,000,000!
The following standards are being addressed through this service learning project:
3.L.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
3.W.4
With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose.
The Ronald McDonald House charities serve in the following ways:
Providing
stability and resources for families everywhere
Helping a sick child fight their illness takes a big enough emotional
toll on a family. Adding a financial strain can make it all almost too much to
bear. RMHC can help address those problems, whether they involve housing that’s
near a hospitalized child, the expense of staying together in another city, or
even getting basic medical and dental care in a vulnerable community. RMHC has
local Chapters in more than 63 countries and regions.
Collecting pop
tabs is a great way to teach kids about philanthropy and the importance of
recycling while raising funds to help children and their families at the same
time. Some of our Chapters raise thousands of dollars with their pop tab
collections – up to $30,000.
Each 3rd grade classroom has a special "house" to collect the pop tabs. There is also a larger tote for all classrooms to send their pop tab/metal tab donations. Please check with one of the 3rd Grade ELP students for additional information.
Thank you.!
