Pop tab information By Peyton Richardson           Hi, I’m Peyton, and I’m part of the 5 th grade ELP (Extended learning program) and I’m here to tell you about pop tabs. Before you recycle the can, remember to take off the tabs, put them in a plastic baggie, and take them to room 209, or the office. We will give them to the Ronald McDonald House, and no, I’m not talking about the French fry place, I’m talking about the place where people go if they can’t afford a hospital room. We are good people.                                                           Bye!

Extended Learning Program for Mo. Valley 2014-2015

Welcome back!  Our ELP groups hope everyone has gotten off to a great start with the 2014-2015 school year. As the year progresses, please look for updates about events and happenings written by ELP students.  Articles may be written in small groups or individually.  We will post about the units of study or topics we are working on. To begin the year, here are the major themes for 3rd-5th grade groups: 3rd Grade:  will be extending on the SWH (Science Writing Heuristically) topic of "Plants and Animals Adapt to Change and Depend on One Another and Their Environments"  Students will be reading and researching about various ecosystems and/or animal groups.  Then they will create a power point slide show to share with their classmates.  We will also be working on vocabulary and fluency with a few fun Reader's Theaters. 4th Grade:  our group will be extending the Science curriculum with research related to the Solar System, Planets and other aspects of Space.  Our cul

Dr. Seuss' Belated Birthday Celebration

Theodor Geisel was his given name.  Being Dr. Seuss brought him great fame..... In honor of Dr. Seuss and his lessons, wit and literary contributions, the Middle School ELP students will be sharing revised versions of some of Dr. Seuss' best loved children's book.  The students created or adapted versions of  Reader's Theaters and will be sharing at the MV Elementary on Thursday, March 13th.   Our objectives have been oral fluency, phrasing and prosodic elements (pitch, tone, inflection).  While Dr. Seuss may seem a bit "young" for Middle School students, we are learning his use of rhyming, alliteration and non-sense words can make for some tricky articulation.   We began our lesson with a choral reading of "Fox in Socks"-----not as easy as it sounds.  Give it a try, if you don't believe us : ) Please check the blog later in the week for photos and short video clips of our readers.  You can also find tid-bits on the Missouri Valley Schools

Middle School "Read and Feed" and Iowa Assessment Test Prep Options

The Middle School ELP students set 3rd quarter goals for AR.  The end of the quarter is Friday, March 14th.  Students could set goals using quiz points accumulated, number of books read or average book level.  Tomorrow, Friday, February 28th will be a "Read and Feed" day for ELP students.  Middle School students may bring a snack and their AR books.  They will be reading during our ELP time and snacking too.  No drinks please....I will give water fountain/restroom time.  As you are aware, Wednesday, March 5th will be "Rock the Test" Iowa Assessment testing day for all Middle School students.  I have spoken with the ELP students to help them set reasonable and attainable progress goals.  In addition, we have done a few activities to make sure they are better prepared for the Iowa Assessments.  The following web sites are great places for students to practice:  www.freerice.com--vocabulary and grammar/written expression www.learninggamesforkids.com--vocabulary/

Student Blogger.....

The Student Blogger By Aidan Hacker, 5 th Grade E.L.P.                 We all know there’s bad things that happen in this world, but we focus on them WAY TOO MUCH to remember the good things. So here’s a wake up call.           “WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!”        No, a “wake up call”. Remember, there’s good things on this planet, too. Like here in 5 th Grade E.L.P. (Extended Learning Program). We held a “fundraiser" for the Harrison County Food Pantry. “The Giving Tree” is what it was titled. We collected items to donate to the Harrison County Food Pantry. In the year of 2013, Missouri Valley Elementary did a good deed for Harrison County.                              Your blogger,                                       Aidan Hacker           P.S., we got 410 items.

Thank You from 5th ELP--Great Job!
