Highlights from ELP 2015-2016

2nd Grade ELP scholars created their own basic coding scripts to move a Bee-bot from one good deed to the next.  Students collaborated to create their own good deeds, then using basic coding commands, they programmed their mini-bot.  Once completed, students exchanged boards and scripts and "tested" the validity of the coding scripts.

In addition, MV ELP had 3 scholars participate in the Iowa State Fair Youth Spelling Bee on Friday, August 11th.  They were:  Bobby Barnard, Noelle Rand and Kate Graeve.  These 3 students represented themselves, their school and their community with great skill and poise.  I was so very proud of their extra efforts and enthusiasm!



During the 2016-2017 school year our ELP blog will be much more student directed.  I have no doubt their learners in our group will have plenty to say about small group collaborations, STEM units/projects and Quiz Bowl competitions we plan to be involved in during this coming year.  Please stay tuned........

Genius Hour---Take One!

The 6th and 7th Grade ELP students have recently wrapped up an independent study in a program called "Genius Hour".  Students selected a topic/idea/theme they had a great deal of interest in or passion for, mapped out a research plan and final project idea, created a final project and then presented their projects to their peers.  We had students with projects ranging from creating rainbow cupcakes to experimenting with "elephant toothpaste and building sugar rockets. Below are pictures and videos from a few of the projects shared with their peers.  The ELP students will plan to create 2 more "Genius Hour" projects over the course of the school year. 3rd ELP Begins Service Learning Project

The 3rd Grade ELP group has begun its first service learning project.  Students are creating informational posters letting the MV Elementary students know we are collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House charities.  The pop tabs collected will be sent to a recycling station where, based on the overall weight, money will be donated to the local Ronald McDonald House.  We have currently collected 957,000 pop tabs and they have set a new goal of 1,000,000! The following standards are being addressed through this service learning project:  3.L.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. 3.W.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl

The first 2 weeks in November will be a very busy time for 5th-7th grade ELP students.  Not only are we administering the Iowa Assessments (formerly, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills), students are also gearing up for the Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl! On Wednesday, November 7th (yes, the day after Election Day) the 5th and 6th graders will be competing in the online competition.  Due to the Iowa Assessments schedule, we will compete as a combined 5th/6th grade group.  The 6th graders will go to the Elem. and we will work in the PM on the 100 multiple choice questions.  The scores are based on accurate answers as well as speed in answering. Tuesday, November 13th is the 7th grade Quiz Bowl competition.  Students will meet in the Middle School and work 6th-8th hour on the Quiz questions.  We have been working on practice quizzes the past week.
