What's Happening in ELP.....

It is hard to believe but we are 1/2 way through the final quarter of the school year!  My goodness, how the time is flying by.  As the year winds down, we want to post an update on our ELP happenings:

K/1st Grade ELP---We meet 2 times a week for 20-25 minutes each time.  Our focus has been research on a wide variety of topics and creating an informative poster.  A few of the poster topics have been:  the circulatory system, magnets, black holes, The Titanic and The BP Oil Spill (Deep Water Horizon).

2nd Grade ELP---We recently finished "Pippi Longstocking" and "Amelia Bedelia 4 Mayor" where our focus was visualization, vocabulary and figurative language such as, idioms and words with multiple meanings.  Our final project for the year will be a novel study of "The Hundred Dresses" where we will connect with our school's Character Education program and continue to develop inference skills.

3rd-5th ELP-- Currently we are working on a cross-curricular/cross-grade level unit of study around Medieval Times/Middle Ages.  Each group is reading a novel and researching topics related to the novel themes.  We will be creating projects to display in the large display case at the front of the Elementary Building.  A few of the project ideas are:  a coat of arms to represent their family clan with descriptive paragraph to cite why certain colors and designs were used, creating replica rooms of castles and detailing how/why the rooms were used and developing model samples of weapons used in Knighthood.  A life-size model of a knight is currently on display in the main hallway.  "Sir G" was created by a High School student as part of the MV Drama Dept.  She graciously lent him to us to enhance our display for the students.

Middle School ELP
6th Grade--- The students are researching India, as it is the main setting for our new novel study.  We will be reading "Homeless Bird"and working on connecting text-to-text, text-to-self and text-to-world.  Our final project for the novel will be to create individual quilt squares to build a class quilt.  The main character learns much about herself and her family history through embroidery on her own sari.

7th Grade--Students have been sharing out the biography projects they created.  They selected a person in history who demonstrated positive accomplishments during his/her lifetime and then created a scrapbook (either virtual or handmade) telling about the person's life.  The finished projects are being used as part of a bulletin board in the Media Center.

We have been busy extending our learning!  Thank you for a great school year!

Mrs. C.
